Automobile and 18-Wheeler Crashes

In 2008, an estimated 2.35 million people were injured and more than 37,200 people died in motor vehicle crashes in the United States. Although fatal crashes are slowly declining from year to year thanks to better roadways and improved automobile safety features, the leading cause of death of people ages 1-34 years remains from motor vehicle accidents in this country.

On Texas roads and highways, more than 242,600 people were injured last year with over 84,500 people sustaining serious injuries. Tragically, 3,468 people lost their lives from motor vehicle crashes. According to statistics from the Texas Department of Transportation, on average, a reportable crash occurs every 72 seconds in Texas.

Large trucks were involved in nearly 124,000 crashes last year which resulted in over 73,000 injuries and 4,229 fatalities across the country. Eighty-four percent of the people killed in large-truck crashes were occupants in other vehicles or non-motorists who were struck by 18-wheelers. Texas ranked second in the number of total vehicles involved in fatal crashes (behind California), but had the highest number of large-truck crashes resulting in fatalities.
